USSR was shit.
Maybe so. USA and France are shit too, but that doesn't mean I'd prefer George III or the French monarchy.
To nuance this, now that I've been accused of being a 'pro-soviet leftie' by some fuckwit. The October revolution was aimed at overthrowing a grotesquely exploitative and brutal economic system and replacing it with one of equality and direct, as opposed to representative, democracy (you know what a 'Soviet' is, right?), and hence is worth celebrating. It didn't work out, this we know, and you won't find me defending 95% of Soviet actions from 1929 to 1991.
Similarly, I'd wager that the French revolution was A Good Thing despite the obvious fact that Liberty Equality and Fraternity don't exactly reign there, either now or when they were torturing Algerians; and the American project to rid the world of kingship and imperialism, even if it was by a bunch of slave-owners, was also rather laudable, despite a record for barbarity which has only two rivals in the 20th century. Glad we've got that clear.
Stalinist Russia, Maoist China, Hitlerite Germany; which one of these did "Amerika" eclipse in brutality?
Also, there's the diverting issue of whether 50 years of daily oppression across the globe (India, Southern Africa, Kenya, et al) by the British Empire pre-involuntary collapse ought to rival the above oppressions? Or how about the narrowly focused but intense oppressions of the Belgian Congo, or the Dutch East Indies?
